APEAL TO ARMY CHIEF

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif said that Pakistan Muslim League-N government led by Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif had given right to the farmers and cultivators by announcing a historic relief package of 341 billion rupees.
According to a handout issued here on Tuesday, the chief minister said that no government in the history of the country announced such a historic relief package for farmers and the credit of such a big farmer-friendly package went to the PML-N.
He said, no doubt, farmers would get relief from this historic package in the real sense and this package was a milestone for the development of agriculture sector on durable basis.
He said the PML-N government had always protected interests of farmers and would do so in future as well, adding that welfare of farmers, protection of their interests and promotion of agriculture was a top priority of the government.
Shehbaz Sharif said that agriculture sector was the backbone in the progress of national economy and if agriculture would progress then Pakistan would move forward.
He said the PML-N government had taken steps on priority basis for resolving the problems of farmers.
That is why, Khadim-e-Punjab Rural Roads Programme was being implemented speedily for the development and promotion of rural economy, he added.

PTI Vice Chairman hails PM’s relief package for farmers

ISLAMABAD: Vice Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Shah Mehmood Qureshi has welcomed Prime Minister's relief package for farmers describing it as a good initiative.
According to Radio Pakistan, the PTI Vice Chairman said he acknowledges the efforts made by the Ministry of National Food Security for providing relief to the farmers.

Taliban vow to bring Sharia law, welcome defectors in captured city

KABUL: The Taliban on Tuesday released a video hailing their takeover of the northern Afghan city of Kunduz with fighters showing off seized tanks and armoured cars, as they promised to enforce Islamic sharia law.
The militants stormed the northern provincial capital on Monday, effectively overrunning it in their biggest triumph since being ousted from national power in 2001.
Afghan troops backed by US air support launched a counter-offensive Tuesday to retake the city, but the Taliban video suggested they could be looking to hold onto their gains. Some analysts had speculated they might melt away after scoring a symbolic victory.
The 10-minute clip posted on Facebook opens with a shot of Kunduz main square where Taliban cadres cheer as they raise their white flag under the wary gaze of subdued-looking residents.
Elsewhere fighters show off tanks and armoured cars they have captured, chanting "Allahu Akbar" (God is the greatest) and roaming the streets in seized pick-up trucks.
A militant tells a crowd that they will bring Islamic sharia law, as they reply "Inshallah" (God willing).
The video ends with a message from the Taliban's newly appointed leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour, though he does not appear on screen.
The message declares: "We do not believe in revenge" and announces a "general amnesty" for government troops wishing to defect.
Mansour's message also instructs government officials and doctors in Kunduz to carry on work as normal, and tells residents the Taliban will ensure their safety and protect their property.
"Kabul should accept this bitter reality of our victory and it should worry about rest of the state," it concludes.
Analysts say that whether or not the Taliban remain in the city, the Kunduz assault will boost Mansour's image within insurgent ranks as he seeks to cement his authority by burnishing his credentials as a commander.
The relative ease with which the militants took the city on their third attempt -- in less than a day and seemingly without major losses -- also bodes badly for the Afghan National Army, which has been fighting the Taliban without NATO combat troops since the start of the year.

Child Immunization Program to switch bivalent polio vaccine: Saira Tarrar

ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, Saira Afzal Tarar endorsed the national plan of switching from trivalent Oral Polio Vaccine (tOPV) to bivalent Oral Polio Vaccine (bOPV) in the Routine Immunization schedule of the EPI.
Reviewing the Switch Plan in a meeting the minister said Tuesday, we are moving one step ahead in unison with the global strategy for polio eradication; with the switch from tOPV to bOPV in the Routine Immunization.
Saira Afzal said with the introduction of one dose of Injectable Polio Vaccine (IPV), we have already set the stage for greater protection of our children against disabling disease of polio.
The withdrawal of tOPV and switch to bOPV along with the introduction of one dose of IPV is part of the strategy of the Polio Eradication and End Game Strategic Plan 2013-2018, she further added.
The Minister said protection of mother and child from deadly and debilitating diseases was her Ministry's top priority and all efforts are being made to this end.
The meeting was briefed on the national plan to switch from tOPV to bOPV by Dr. Saqlain Ahmad Gilani, National Program Manager, EPI.
He shared the detailed timeline of all activities included in the process of switch to bOPV and withdrawal of tOPV from the system. "Preparations are underway to switch the tOPV to bOPV on a National Switch Day", added National Program Manager during his remarks.
A key objective of the Polio Endgame Strategy 2013-2018 clearly lays down inclusion of one dose of IPV in the Routine Immunization and switch from tOPV to bOPV.
Currently tOPV is administered to all children under Routine Immunization schedule. With the eradication of poliovirus type 2 and 3 from the country, it is recommended to use bOPV in the EPI schedule to fight against poliovirus type 1 that is the only type existing in the country.
Health experts are of the view that with the inclusion of bOPV in the Routine Immunization, herd immunity will increase with better protection and defence mechanism of each child.
Earlier EPI program has achieved a milestone by introducing IPV in the Routine Immunization program that is administered at the age of 14 weeks to all eligible children.

The meeting was also attended by Secretary Health Muhammad Ayub Sheikh alongwith senior officials, development partners and donors.

Preparations in full swing for Eid-ul-Azha in Karachi

KARACHI: Preparations for Eid-ul-Azha are in full swing in the metropolis with many looking for a sacrificial animal that may not only be in accordance to the religious requirement but also suitable to their respective budgets.
One can also find that arrangements for realizing the religious obligation of "qurbani" (sacrifice of animals) are not only being made at community level but many of the people are also finalizing this in their individual capacities.
This is not all, shopping centres alongwith special Eid bazaars are equally attractive for the families keen to ensure that the three day festival is celebrated in a befitting manner.
In the given scenario there should be no surprise to see frequent traffic jams across the city. These gridlock can also be attributed to makeshift cattle markets, witnessed in different areas despite official ban on sale in such manner.
Makeshift stalls selling fodder and cattle specific ornaments are an equal site of attraction for the proud purchasers.
Mufti Abdul Naim, a senior religious scholar commenting on the situation said it was an equal responsibility of the religious community as well as media to educate masses that this festival is meant to inculcate the spirit of sacrifice among the faithful.
"There is nothing wrong to be excited and happy but the tendency to show off is against the spirit of our religion," he said.
Similarly, he said this was also a time when people must all the more realize their responsibilities towards each other with equal care that they may not cause any inconvenience for others and also be tolerant and patient.
City administration conscious of the need to be extremely cautious towards ensuring hygiene and cleanliness, has made elaborate arrangements for cleanliness across the city.
